George Haines passed away in his sleep early on the morning of May 1, 2006, in Carmichael, California, four years after suffering the aftermath of a severe stroke. The school's football stadium is named after former coach Dick Haines, a successful Vista High coach who led the 1974 and 1985 Vista High School football teams to state championships. The Panthers have won the CIF championship nine times. To date, the school has produced five NFL players.
