It is pH nuetral, contains high amounts of silica essential in strengthening cell walls and plant tissue and is much better at water retention than anything else on the market. It at takes literally 4 or 5 weeks of soaking used hydroton is frequently changed water to remove all the nutrients they soak up in just one grow. So really both your proffered choices suck.
